PE teacher testing
Being a GA at Slippery Rock I get to see how college students behave and their habits when it comes to physical activity. I think that Physical Educators should have to go through a physical that includes exercises from all 5 physical fitness categories: Cardio-vascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and flexibility. PE teachers are some of the most hypocritical people in the world if you think about it. We expect students to perform in all of these areas but we are selves are not held accountable. Nothing bothers me more than a PE teacher who is physically unfit that expects their students to perform.

Hey Nate! If I remember correctly, I believe that Dr. McKinley mentioned last week in class that the PE majors at SRU will soon be required to undergo a physical fitness assessment. Students will have to meet certain protocols in order to stay in the program. I agree with you that a lot of PE teachers out there don't practice what they teach to students. I remember having a few PE teachers who were physically unfit or lazy. Good Post.
ReplyDeleteI was actually inspired to be a Physical Education teacher because my middle school PE teacher sat in a chair with her feet propped up while we did our homework in the bleachers or played basketball because that was the only equipment that she would get out for us (not to mention the cane she used because she was so obese that her knees couldn't carry her and she was only about 45 years old). With that being said, I totally agree with what you posted. I feel that in order for Physical Education to be taken seriously, we need to practice what we preach and the students need to see us being good role models. You mentioned fitness testing and I would even take it as far as skills testing for each of our classes that are required in the major. We need to be able to demonstrate and provide examples for students and if we can't even show them the skill or exercise then they won't think it is important enough for them to master. Last time I checked, they didn't give a math major a degree in mathematics if they couldn't do an example correctly on the board for their students. :)
ReplyDeleteDude. Right on! I am tired of hearing the battle cry from these "roll models" that you can be big and fit. What a joke. I think that you should always practice what you preach. I also think that police, fire, and other like jobs should have to pass a yearly PT test as well.
ReplyDeleteNathan, I agree with the idea of yearly physical fitness testing for PE Teachers. We should be fit if we are trying to teach our students to be fit. We should practice what we preach. I love to compete with my students in PE. We play flag football in the spring and fall and it is great to be able to participate with my students. During our unit on whiffleball, I participate with the students. I often tell my students that if I cannot participate in a competitive manner, then it is time to retire. The students enjoy this participation from their teacher. This helps buid relationships and rapport with my students.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Chad
