Inclusion
How do we feel about inclusion? Should people with disabilities be included in PE or should they have their own adapted PE class? Does it depend on the disibility? Does it depend on the activity being performed in class that day? Do we teach our students inclusion at a young age so that they have that life skill throughout life? How far do we go to help a person with a disability if it is limiting students without disabilities?

Hi Nate! I think the best scenario for students with special needs is to be mainstreamed in smaller PE classes and enrolled in an adapted class. If this is not a possibility, I think it depends on the student's needs. If a student is going to get more from an adapted class physically I think it is important for them to take that class. However, I think PE is a great social environment for these students as well. I don't think there will ever be a clear cut answer to the question!
ReplyDeleteNathan, My thoughts on this topic are similar to Gina's. I believe that students with disabilities-mental and physical should be in a class where we as educators can meet their needs. The only solution is adapted physical education. Our school does not have an adapted PE class. All students are put into the PE class as it fits into their schedule. Some classes have 8 students some have 30. Particpation and comfort level will increase if students are placed in classes that meet their needs. Another consideration is safety. We may be creating an unsafe environment for these students by including them in all activities. On the other end, the students that are able to perform at an average-advanced level are bored because of the lack of competition and skill level. I don't see a problem with separating students in order to meet their needs. I could write about this topic forever. It is a good one!
